How to treat minor burns
A burn is a damage to the skin or tissue which is usually caused by contact with either something really hot or an electrical current. An exposure to a radiated heat source, however, also damages the body skin as well as tissues to a great extent depending upon the degree of exposure.
Burns are usually categorized into three types namely; first degree burns also known as minor burns, partial or second degree burns and full thickness or third degree burns.
Minor burns usually heal on their own without much medical treatment needed whereas the second and third degree burns require proper medical treatment as they are quite painful at times.
First degree burns or minor burns are the least severe burns which usually damages only the outer layer of the skin without affecting it all the way through. It makes the skin appear red along with some pain. Sun burns are mostly minor burns. Moreover, hands are also quite often involved in this category of burns. In case of hand burns, aggressive treatment is needed as hands are made up of delicate tendons and muscles in a comparatively small area. In case of slight negligence, permanent damage can also occur.
As mentioned earlier, minor burns are usually treated at home, therefore, following procedure should be followed while handling them.
a. Cool the burn using tepid or cool water for few minutes as soon as possible. It should be done ideally within 10-20 minutes after the damage occurs. In case of taking late actions, there is every possibility that the burn can get worse.
b. In order to soothe the burn, take a cool bath or shower instead of applying greasy substance, cream or butter on it.
c. Cover the burn afterwards using either a plastic bag or a cling film.
d. In case of any pain, mild painkiller such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help a great deal in feeling better. However, do not forget to read the dosage instructions before taking it.
Carefully handle the burns and in case of any signs of infection, do visit your nearest hospital or consult your doctor immediately.
